Samoa Independence Day @ office

At New Zealand Micrographic Services and Desktop Imaging, our generous Samoan colleagues invited all of us to a Samoan lunch to celebrate their Independence Day today.

Samoa Independence Day is a significant public holiday in Samoa.

It is celebrated on June 1 every year.

This is the day when the country achieved its independence in 1962 when the command of New Zealand over Samoa ceased.

It doesn't look it, but chop suey, Samoan style is really yummy! I am surprise it look so similar to a Malaysian Chinese dish :) Only Malaysian Chinese also use cellophane noodles, also known as Chinese vermicelli.

Chop suey (Chinese: ; pinyin: suì; literally "assorted pieces") is widely believed to have been invented in America by Chinese immigrants, but in fact comes from Taishan, a district of Guangdong Province, which was the home of many of the early Chinese immigrants to the US. The Hong Kong doctor Li Shu-fan reported that he knew it in Taishan in the 1890s. - Wikipedia -

Samoan culture has a very long and complex history which includes great migratory movements, and the whole history of its population.

One of the most important aspects of the Samoan cuisine is represented by the fact that food is not heavily spiced as it is characterised by the use of coconut milk and cream.

We were entertain to a dance accompanied by a Samoan song called - O le Taualuga.

This is a popular Samoan song telling about the Samoan dance, a dance of grace and beauty being performed to special guests.

Our thanks and appreciation goes to, from left; Lei, Annette, Victoria, Tavita, Lise, Sam and Darrius (the baby)!

** All the photos were shot with my Canon G12, some with the WC-E75 add-on lens. Fill in bounce flash was from the little Sunpak RD2000.
